For the third edition of Real Scenes, RA and Bench go to one of the most special places for electronic music in the world: Berlin. When the Berlin Wall came down in 1989, techno became the underground soundtrack to the reunion between East and West. In recent years, it’s become an international destination for ravers—a cheap place to party with clubs that are renowned throughout the world.

Techno has become a business in the meantime. Yet Berlin still maintains a credibility that other cities lack. To understand why, RA and Bench went to the German capital eager to find out about its unique history and the reasons behind its continued relevance.

Modulations: Cinema for the Ear:
Documentarian Lara Lee, a U.S.-based, Brazilian-born filmmaker, skated through virtual reality, cyber-stimuli, and recreational technologies in her fast-paced Synthetic Pleasures (1995), notable for the memorable “surf’s up” sequence inside a Japanese indoor beach with rolling waves. Where Synthetic Pleasures attempted to explore all aspects of the digital domain, Modulations focuses just on modern music-rave parties, techno dance music, and the history of electronic music (John Cage, Karlheinz Stockhausen, Robert Moog), moving on to ’70s innovators (Kraftwerk, Giorgio Moroder), hip-hop pioneers, and more recent club-scene creators (Prodigy, Moby, Money Mark, Future Sound of London, The Invisibl Skratch Piklz), capturing diverse dance-track styles (house, trip-hop, acidhouse, ambient). The 35mm film brings together archival material, video clips, concert footage, and numerous interviews with musicians.

50 jahre verpackt in 3 minuten. das kann natuerlich nicht zur vollstaendigen zufriedenheit fuehren. dennoch, einige wichtige stationen der entwicklung elektronischer musik werden in dem 3 minuten clip zusammengefasst.

SubBerlin – Underground United:
In SubBerlin – Underground United kommen die Macher und DJs der ersten Stunde noch einmal zu Wort. Egal, ob nun Hegemann selbst, Johnnie Stieler, Regina Baer oder die DJs wie Sven Väth, Dr. Motte oder auch die Detroiter Legenden Jeff Mills und Blake Baxter – sie alle haben ihre Anekdoten über den damaligen Hype in der werdenden Bundeshauptstadt zu erzählen; von einem Berlin, welches kurz nach dem Mauerfall ein wahres, fast anarchisches Paradies für die Subkultur war. So kurz nach der Wende schien damals Alles möglich: In Ostberlin war die Frage nach den Grundstückseigentümern meist ungeklärt und so schufen ein paar Kulturaktivisten einen magischen Ort, an dem sich die Jugend aus beiden Teilen der Stadt erstmals zum Feiern traf. Der Film zeigt die Entwicklung einer bis dahin unbekannten Musik zwischen Detroit, Berlin und großem Stern, wo Techno zehn Jahre später endgültig zum Massenphänomen werden sollte.
